It’s like an itch I can’t reach. A couple of animation which I would like to watch, but haven’t had the opportunity to. “My Dog Tulip” is an animation feature scheduled to screen at ITFS’10 but didn’t. Imagine my excitement and disappointment. I have to look harder, having my eyes peeled for them in Tokyo and Singapore.

The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Lion

Max is a 7-year-old deaf boy growing up in the 1960s. One day he goes on a school trip to the zoo where he sees a lion for the first time. A feeling begins to grow inside him that will change his life forever.

Special Mention, Hush Baby awarded at 22nd SIFF

Hush Baby was awarded the Special Mention award at the award ceremony of 22nd Singapore International Film Festival last night. I was so over the cloud that, even though I had my ‘thank-you’ speech memorised (which the audience must be aware of), I forgot the entire list of names whom I am thankful for, and would like to extend this award to them. Zihan, Vanessa, Henry, Harry, Thomas, Lincoln and Bernard. I think I am fortunate to have met friends and loved ones who believed in me enough to spend time, effort and money on Hush Baby, so thank you all.

There is a commendation letter that was passed to me by the presenters, and on it printed, “an original animation piece that reflected a good sense of humour within the framework of a short film”. I am assuming the jury members gave this comment, or the SIFF festival directors. Thank you, that is a very great encouragement for me.

Hush Baby for 22nd Singapore International Film Festival

Premiering at the 22nd Singapore International Film Festival, Hush Baby will be greeting audiences together with 8 other short films in the Singapore Short Film category. There are 3 screenings in April at The Arts House, Screening Room:

15 April (Wed) 9:15pm
18 April (Sat) 11:30am
25 April (Sat) 4:30pm

SIFF website is officially up! Besides being available online, the programme booklets should already be available at all Sistic outlets, Substation , and authorised screening venues. :D

Hush Baby

Hush Baby is my latest animated short film completed recently in Jan ‘09. It runs for about 3 minutes, and as you can see there is a mixture of techniques like pixilation, 2D hand-drawn and 3D elements. Hush Baby is more of an experimentation than a narrative and I’m really excited at how the final render turned out. Hush Baby will be greeting audiences soon, stay tuned!

A Flash of Happiness

Directed and animated by Hannes Rall, DICKI – The Gym Lesson tells the day of a boy who doesn’t excel in sports, and his gym instructor who simply has to make this day a living hell for him. Hannes is an animation professor at the School of Art, Design and Media and he has been my mentor since 2005. His body of works includes The Raven and The Erl-King as well as a wide range of commercial advertisement.

I came on board DICKI in October 2006 and worked as an apprentice mainly in inking, clean-up and post-production in Animo. DICKI is all hand-drawn and it is fascinating to sift through countless sheets of paper in boxes sitting in the room (more than 12, I’m sure), not to mention the inking. I consider it an experience and skill gained.

The colour design is done by Viet Tu who is a viscom student at the same school.

Background art for my graduation film ‘A Flash of Happiness’.

The colours turned out exactly how I imagined them. Especially when the sunlight pours in, and there’s so much hope around the room. At one point while colouring I felt the urge to stop, call someone and say I can’t do this story because it is too personal and it hurts.
